(Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images for NARAS) Update: This article originally stated that “This Is America” was likely the first single off of the artist’s upcoming album, but RCA Records, the musician’s label, has stated that it will not serve in that capacity. Seemingly out of nowhere, Donald Glover, or perhaps those listening to him and his new song know him better as Childish Gambino, dropped an amazing single with a shocking music video to accompany it, and now the tune has become one of the few to debut at the top of the all-genre singles chart. Gambino’s new track opens at No. 1 on the Hot 100, Billboard ’s weekly ranking of the 100 most popular songs of any genre in the United States. The controversial cut is the thirty-first to begin its run on the chart at the peak, and somewhat shockingly, it’s the third of this year. Drake debuted a pair of tunes at the top, and Gambino has now ended the rapper’s successful run, at least for one frame.
